— CANON POINT: End of first season.
— SEX/PRONOUNS: Male, he/him
— AGE: 25

— SEXUALITY & PREFERENCES: Nothing in canon has proven to me that Chase isn't pan, so. We're going with that.
— HUGGING: He's a hologram like 90% of the time but he likes hugs!
— KISSING: Have fun smooching intangible pixels!
— FLIRTING: This guy spent an entire season contemplating pick-up lines and never got further than "Hey", but come at him with that.
— RELATIONSHIPS: Boy, that gets kinda complicated! He's not opposed to them on the whole but he's also isn't fighting to jump into one at current.
— KINK LIST: I'll f-list one at some point soon.

— PHYSICAL VIOLENCE: Due to the nature of his world, he's no stranger to violence. But in Erku: He's not about to stop anyone from trying to punch his hologram.
— SEXUAL VIOLENCE: Probably not happening in any capacity.
— DEATH: Also mostly a no-go. Would require plotting.
— OFF LIMITS: Talking about his True and Honest Feelings on the first date. (But on a more genuine note, I'll add anything if it comes up.)

OOC

— BACKTAGGING: Pretty much a necessity for me! I'll reply until the end of time but I can rarely do it quickly, due to my irregular schedule.
— THREADHOPPING: Ask!
— FOURTHWALLING: Would rather not.
— HANDWAVING/DROPPING THREADS: That's fine! HMU if u want to discuss where any of it might have gone.

Background:
Wiki-link, which covers up through the first episode, and history pre-dating that (much of it revealed over the course of the series). For a look at the history following ep.1: His return from apparent death is met with mixed emotions, and while Chase is able to reunite joyously with some old friends, he struggles to get Miranda to talk to him, though he tries periodically during the course of his stay at the Anvil.

The rest of the new gen:LOCK candidates picked by Weller arrive to the Anvil, one of which is a Union spy posing in place of a legitimate candidate, though he’s not actually GL-compatible. The imposter is found out, and dies in the process of attempting to escape the scene via gen:LOCK uplinking. The remaining candidates, the legitimate ones, are left hesitant to participate upon finding out that it can result in death if attempted without compatibility. Chase tries to talk them into it, and though he's unsuccessful, the reveal that they will be uploading their digitised brains into giant robots winds up being a good enough selling point to keep them around.

He helps with training them, taking a few chances to show off what they can really do once adjusted to their robot bodies as he has. Before anyone at the Anvil is confident they’re entirely ready, they all head out onto their first mission. It goes badly, due to the appearance of another robot unit, Nemesis — the original iteration of Chase, who has been tortured at length by the Union and now acts on their behalf. At first, no one recognises him as having any similarity to Chase, but after another battle it comes into question due to the voice and some behaviours Nemesis exhibits. Chase later confronts Weller about the fact that Nemesis clearly has some similarities to himself, and the truth of Chase being only a copy of the original comes to light. Weller tries to let Chase know more, but an assault on the Anvil draws Chase’s attention away from the conversation.

In the battle that follows, the team starts to explore the connection they share through the mind-link provided by gen:LOCK, which Chase does not participate in, despite how everyone else benefits through sharing their minds with one another. The GL team escapes via airship and the Anvil falls, Union nano-particles swarming the base and leaving everyone within it presumed dead (later discovered not to be so, thanks to some protective measures Weller had put in to place shortly before, although Weller himself does not make it). Chase struggles with the loss of the base, of all his friends and long-known teammates, but the fact that Nemesis keeps following and finding the team as they’re on the run is something he's forced to face first before he can address his emotions. Someone discovers that Nemesis, as someone who had initially been uploaded to a holon through the GL program, is running on the same network that the others are and that no one can upload into their holon without Nemesis uncovering them.

They make their way to the next planned stage for the GL program, to the top secret Rogue Technology Aeronautics and Space Administration (RTASA), wherein they recover from their big battle and work on making more specialised improvements their holons. For the first time in four years, Chase changes his holographic appearance to wearing the GL suits, rather than the Vanguard pilots uniform he’d been sporting for so long.

The team confronts Nemesis yet again, in a battle at Chicago, and once again everyone but Chase connects through their mind-link, lending their talents to one another and improving their chances at winning, but also bleeding their life experiences into one another as they do. Chase reveals to his friends that he's afraid of connecting to them in that way, unsure of how it could change him, but they manage to reassure him that change can be a good thing. He chooses to embrace that, sacrificing his connection to his physical body in an attempt to protect everyone. It works, and everyone is able to come together and reign victorious, though not without Nemesis first leaving behind an ominous impression of what else the Union might have in store for them.

Personality:
The fact that gen:LOCK starts out with Chase sacrificing himself says a lot about him. He was the son of two police officers, and later joined the Vanguard in order to be the change he wanted to see, in wanting a better world. He strongly believes in doing what’s right, readily agreeing to join the ESU and gen:LOCK program even if it meant letting people he loves think him dead, because he understood the difference he could make, and was driven by the importance of working towards the greater good. Even without a functional body, he decided very quickly that he would rather have spent every day in secret working towards the success of the Polity over the Union, instead of letting himself take it easy despite all he’d been through.

Chase is an extremely personable guy, who had several close friends and teammates prior to the battle at New York. Even after the reveal that he’d spent years hiding the truth of his survival, most of those same people wished him back heartily instead of holding the lie over his head (Miranda is an outlier and should not have been counted, but in her defence, they had been quite the couple at the time). The show’s creator/director has described him as “charming, funny, and the first guy to break the ice to make sure people are doing OK.” His humour is a little cheeky — popping up in the middle of a fight with the intent of distracting by saying boo, or joking about how they were delivering a pizza when the RTASA security was surprised by their sudden appearance. He’s proven good at disarming tensions with this kind of attitude, without taking away from the matters at hand completely.

Even in immensely stressful situations, Chase manages to keep himself together and occasionally uses his personable skills to keep others calm throughout. It’s something he succeeds in partly due to his military training, and partly thanks to his natural disposition; Weller had described all GL candidates as having to be “the most resilient, adaptable people you’ll ever meet”, after all.

His skill in playing it cool also helps act as a defence mechanism, as Chase struggles with a lot of his own deep-running personal problems. The reveal of his being a copy of the original Chase left him internalising his own validity as an individual, wondering whether or not he was still a person or if he lost that identity as some duplicate put into a physical body that he may not have even had the right to. It doubled down on an existing feeling that his mind was the only thing he had of his own, at that point. He sat with these feelings in relative silence for a long time, sharing them only with those closest to him — which didn’t even include his GL teammates until very recently to his timeline.

One of the things he’s struggled to cope with is the need to move on, tying himself to the past because he clung to the way that had once been his normal, even if his hopes of getting it back was something that stayed extremely questionable. For four years he worked with the ESU instead of the Vanguard, but continued to project his image with his Vanguard pilot’s uniform up until he believed everyone was lost to the battle at the Anvil. Despite finding out that Miranda had tried moving on and entered a new relationship, he let her know that he’d be open to try and work things out between them, if anything like that could be rekindled. His GL-teammates had to talk to him, convince him that changing from what he’d been was okay, that he needed to let go and grow as a person to move on from some of the hurt haunting him.

Powers:
gen:LOCK Compatibility — Very few people are capable of achieving gen:LOCK, as the technology for it currently stands (“gen:LOCK has been pressed into service so early, the process is still in such a nascent, raw state. It requires a very unique nervous system, a tremendous amount of neuroplasticity, in order to work.”), but Chase remains one of them.

Connecting to the Holon — Through gen:LOCK digitising and uploading Chase’s mind to a brain unit stored in the holon, he’s able to remotely pilot this robot body, allowing him a great range of control due to the way he becomes it. Doing so requires the correct technology (for him, it’s built into the preservation tank he’s maintained in) and a trained person or robot on the outside to navigate the computer controls that will up/down-load his mind.

RTASA Holon Modifications — After the battle at the Anvil, RTASA helped modify and upgrade the teams holons. The version that’s coming with him is at around the 50’ mark in height, has wings with rockets attached to them, a rifle that matches his colour scheme, and various weapons built into the limbs.

Digital Brain/the Mindscape — With GL digitising their minds, Chase and any other GL-compatible persons exist on a shared network whenever they’re loaded into it. Through it, they can achieve “phase two” of gen:LOCK, sharing selective memories and skills like computer files as needed, in a form of telepathy. They can look out of the eyes of one another’s holons, or identify one-another’s location so long as they’re on the network. It’s possible to turn away someone’s effort to reach out in the Mindscape, to an extent, but some of the telepathic bleed-over is unavoidable if the person reaching out pushes for it anyway.

Mixed Reality/Mixing/Hologram — Not a power, exactly, but a large number of people in the show have “Mixed Reality Lenses”, a type of VR contact lens that permits digital overlays, which in turn allows people to project holograms if needed. Chase largely interacts with people in this way, over the course of the series, and while it won’t be nerfed, exactly, the means by which people can see him is going to change to the island-provided bracelet.
